About
the Award Winning Entry:
The Power Users Initiative
is a joint effort of the United Nations Fund for International Partnerships and
the Educational Development Center, a Boston-based education non-profit that
focuses on human development around the world. At the Symposium held in Costa
Rica, teams of students from all across the world prepared and then presented
a solution to a unique challenge, related to the UN Millienium Goals. Student
presentations were shared interactively, live online, with an international online
audience. The Australian team addressed the use of technology in developing early
warning and response systems to natural disasters, like the recent tsunami in
southeast Asia. The presentation began and ended with emotional and dramatic
segments that reinforced the need for the innovative approach they outlined.
An opening photo montage with music reminded participants of the human cost of
a lack of early warning systems, and the recitation of an original poem closed
the event with a call for caring and compassion for our fellow man. |
