Live Session Objective:
The Cognitive Science Society started an online seminar series for members, faculty, graduate students, and practitioners in 2002. The seminars are typically attended by 100-200 people around the world, and are used for education and professional development.

Nominator's Comments:
The archived session of the Cognitive Science Society online seminar series is an example of the seminar, offered for free, to over 100 people around the world. The seminar encourages participation through audio question and answer sessions, and through a lively text chat throughout the seminar, which is moderated by the presenter's graduate student. The seminar series has been successful at disseminating research results to a broad live international audience, as well as being available as an archive. The seminar speakers are among the best known researchers in the field. The seminars have brought in new members to the Cognitive Science Society and have dramatically increased recognition and awareness of the society and its goals. The seminars are managed by Tom Ward, the Cognitive Science Society's executive director. The sessions are moderated by Lisa Neal, who coaches speakers in advance, helps them design the session and their materials, wrote the post-session survey, and provides post-session feedback to presenters. The technology is managed by Gilbert Mizrahi, Aptima, Inc. The seminar series is sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR).
